An international convention, The World Heritage Convention, was adopted in 1972. The aim was to give special protection to places that because of their universal value must be regarded as part of the world heritage for future generations and for the whole of humanity. The UNESCO World Heritage List contains areas or objects which are an irreplaceable part of the world´s cultural or natural heritage. Norway has six sites on the list.
The World Heritage List includes areas or objects protected under the World Heritage Convention. Norway ratified the convention in 1977, and has six sites on the list. In addition to these sites, four Norwegian points of measurements are part of the international site The Struve Geodetic Arc.
